About Me

I have been sculpting full time since 1999, following a career in graphic design and teaching.

I love working with the human form and find the shape, movement and expression that can be achieved by stylising this form exciting and inspirational. I find the blend of movement, abstraction and balance challenging and I love exploring where this challenge will lead.

I don't want to be representational but I do want my work to suggest subject, movement, intention and mood and then let viewer fill in the rest complete the details for their individual interpretation. How much information do I need to provide? Hopefully just enough to spark the imagination not complete the story for them.

I've found working with the male form a particularly interesting challenge - how to stylise without parody and how to simplify shape and movement that is uniquely male.

I rarely use any armatures or structure when creating my pieces as I find them too restricting. Often the piece I work on has been triggered by a scribble and it does not really have form until I have played around and developed it. There is a price to pay for this there has been many a morning when I have come back into my studio to find the piece has broken or tipped over during the night. Rarely does it destroy the piece it just creates a new version a different direction.

Every time I complete a piece and see it in bronze I immediately think how I can improve it or do better or different. Each piece leads to the growth in ideas and technique, how I can articulate better in the medium and, most importantly, how I can grow.

However, I want to maintain some irreverence in both form and naming to balance the traditional medium of bronze that I usually work in. I will often use iconic Aussie names such as Johnno & Bruce. I like to think that my work does make people smile but I don't want to mock the form or medium.

I also think it is really important that people want to touch my work and feel comfortable in doing so.
